Listeners at Agatsu

A place to be heard, when you need it

The Agatsu Community Centre has Listeners — trained volunteers who offer one-on-one, empathetic listening.

They are not therapists. They don’t diagnose, advise, or try to fix things.

They offer something simpler: a calm, respectful space to talk and be heard.

What is a Listener?

A Listener is a trained volunteer who sits with you and listens — without judgement, interruption, or agenda.

What a Session Is Like

Listener sessions don’t happen in a dedicated room. You and the Listener will find a relatively quiet spot within the community centre — wherever feels most comfortable and appropriate at the time.

A Listener will:

  • Listen with care and attention

  • Hear you think out loud

  • Support you in navigating Agatsu’s resource sheet

  • Share info about what's available Agatsu.

Listeners will not:

  • Give advice or offer solutions

  • Make formal referrals

  • Keep records of what you share

Confidentiality & Care

Listener conversations are confidential. The only exception is if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, in which case safety protocols apply. Listeners are trained to recognise these situations and respond responsibly.

Participation constitutes acknowledgment that Listeners provide listening support only, do not act or intervene on behalf of participants, and cannot be compelled to disclose conversations except where required for safety.

Become a Listener

Listeners at Agatsu are community volunteers who choose to support others through listening. If you’d like to become a Listener, you’ll go through a structured and supported training process.

    • 8 hours of training across 2 Saturdays (Online)

    • Learning what listening is (and isn’t)

    • Boundaries, consent, and confidentiality

    • Recognizing distress & knowing when to pause/escalate

    • Clear internal protocols for safety situations

  • • Minimum 6-month commitment

    • At least 2 hours per week of volunteering

    • Mandatory weekly offloading (support for you)

At the end of the commitment, volunteers receive a certificate.
